Israel-Palestine: Lost In Translation

The following is a snippet I pulled out of an article circulating in Greece as well as other countries due to social networking connections. Read through the snippets, I will share a few remarks along with the link to the complete article.

At first glance, might not seem to be the most direct way to stop the killing, but history has shown us that when the economic costs of the occupation grows, it opens the road to peace. Click to ask six major banks, pension funds and corporations to withdraw their investments APTA occupied. If each and everyone of us involved in the appeal now, we can create a truly global outcry that would cause them to withdraw their investment - the economy of Israel shaken so would subvert that political benefits from such a sought through controversy. Within five weeks, three Israeli teenagers were murdered in the West Bank, a Palestinian boy aptin burnt alive, a child brutally beaten American citizenship AP'TIN Israeli police and more than 40 children have been killed in Gaza by Israeli air strikes. There is no longer a Palestinian - this is a war against innocent children and the world has started to develop immunity to the images global shame.

This may not feel like a direct way to stop the current killing, but history tells us that raising the financial cost of oppression can pave a path to peace. Sign the petition on the right and call on 6 key banks, pension funds and businesses to pull out -- If we all take smart action now and turn up the heat, they could withdraw, the Israeli economy will take a hit, and we can turn the calculation of the extremists politically profiting from this hell upside down.

In the last five weeks three Israeli teenagers were murdered in the West Bank, a Palestinian boy was burnt alive, an American kid was brutally beaten up by Israeli police, and now over 40 Gazan kids have died in Israeli air strikes. This is not the "Middle East conflict", it's becoming a war on children. And we are becoming numb to this global shame.

H/T: Ισραήλ-Παλαιστίνη: Έτσι θα τελειώσει

Last time I checked Israel is not “the occupation” in Gaza! I guess anti-Semitism is at an all time high in Greece as well as other countries. Greeks forgot about the Greek Jews who were murdered by Hitler. They look at what is happening in Gaza and they blame Israel. Well, what about Hamas!? Is Israel supposed to sit back and take it? No, I don’t think so.

The most disturbing thing about this article are the translations! If you take the Greek and plug it into Google Translate the English is very different from the English Article that is offered on the same site.

They have the nerve to say “history tells us” – really? What does history tell us? Is it your version of history? Is it history omitting facts over time or is it propaganda?

Why should Israel “take a hit” economically when they are already taking rockets from Hamas?

H/T: Israel-Palestine: This is how it ends

If you read through the English version it’s pretty horrifying how they’ve painted Israel. Can you even for a single second believe that they acknowledge Hamas as a body of people who are already under “crippling sanctions?”

Israel is the size of New Jersey and they are surrounded by people whose goal is to wipe them off the planet. Have you ever read the charter of Hamas? Don’t read the Greek version! Read it from the Yale website and then translate it to the Greek language.

I don’t know if this AVAAZ.org is a Greek website. I do know there are many translations at the top of the page that have gone wrong.

Israel is not the occupation in Gaza. It is Hamas that is the occupation in Gaza. Instead of boycotting Israel and getting in bed with Hamas, the nations should be getting together to help Israel stop Hamas from terrorizing the innocent civilians on both sides.

  1. It's always going to get lost in translation because e-translations are often too literal and rife with errors, because they do not consider idioms, figures of speech, definition differentiation, denotation vs. connotation, or sentence structure/differentiation. Online translations get single word translations incorrect; they certainly won't capture the full meaning and intent of a paragraph. You need a human translator, and even then there will be misinterpretations.

  2. Translations can be tough, that is true. But calling on banks to pull out? This world is so screwed up. People are dying. People are being murdered and all over this world the sympathy is being given to the ones doing the murdering! I don't understand it. I never will.
